The Economic Empowerment of Youth component is part of UNDP’s Poverty Reduction and Environmental Protection (PREP) programme, which Puntland Y-PEER carried out at piracy prone areas in Puntland particularly Alula/Habo and Bargal districts. This project was aimed to train with five different skills to one hundred and forty (140) vulnerable youths (80 females and 60 males) who successfully completed six months of social rehabilitation and reintegration component.
The beneficiaries received four months of training in electricity, mobile repairing, tailoring, beauty salon, and business entrepreneurship. These offered courses were picked from needs assessment report conducted by Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation which emphasized the demanded skills for youths living coastal areas of Puntland.
The syllabus of those courses was provided by the Non-Formal Education Department of Ministry of Education of Puntland, and Y-PEER hired professional instructors who have excellent record in similar duties. During the programme, the trainees were provided printed text-books, notebooks, pens, and different materials for practical courses.
